The Form of 2010 plaque is now completed.  The detail photograph above shows a sample of the painted finish on the plaque – a house on wheels to represent the moving of the brick faculty house to make room for building the Lindsay Center.

The completed framed plaque will be revealed on Anniversary Weekend on Saturday May 30th – at which time photographs of the finished plaque will be published online.  Thank you to the representatives from the Form of 2010 for their help with this project –  I am looking forward to seeing members of the Form of 2010 at the SPS Anniversary event to celebrate your new Form plaque!

  • Lower left: A penguin in formal attire representing the Senior Prom.
  • Lower right: A penguin with hockey stick and puck representing the girls varsity hockey team’s participation in the Frozen Fenway event.

  • Top left and right: A ribbon banner with the words “Many more hills to climb” an excerpt from the Nelson Mandela quote:

After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.

From: Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela, p. 554, Little, Brown & Company (1994).

Now that the carving stage is completed the plaque will be oiled and painted before being put on display for Anniversary/Graduation weekend at the end of May.

The 2012 Plaque is UP!

The plaque presentation ceremony on June 1st – as part of Alumni and Graduation weekend at SPS – saw a very good turnout from the Form of 2012 to see their newly completed name plaques and Form plaque.  The frame and date panels were late in arriving, so I set up a display of the plaque for that event:

Today, with much less fanfare but no less enthusiasm, the framed 2012 plaque was placed in its final spot in the Middle dining hall of Upper (Coit). The Form of 2012 had its representative today in the person of Amelia D., who is working as the summer intern at Ohrstrom Library.

Amelia is shown below with the finished plaque:

The 2012 date panels were hung earlier this week above the name panels:

Scott Russell from carpentry was on hand to hang the plaque:

And Amelia is shown posing before the Form of 2012 name panels where she saw her carved name for the first time today:

Thanks to Amelia, Scott, and all the representatives from the Form of 2012 for turning out to see the 2012 Form plaque!

The Form of 2012 Plaque

Here is a photograph of the completed plaque for the Form of 2012. It was dedicated on June 1, 2013 and hangs in the Middle Dining Hall of Coit (The Upper) above the panels that contain the names of all the members of the Form of 2012. Below the photo is the description of the elements incorporated in the plaque design.

The upper left corner of the plaque features an open book with the initials MGH carved onto the pages, representing the beginning of the Rectorship of Michael Gifford Hirschfeld, Thirteenth Rector of St. Paul’s School. The book symbolizes the Rural Record, a journal of day-to-day life that was kept at St. Paul’s School from 1857 into the early 20th century. The upper right corner shows the symbol for the Delphians – the Greek letter Delta surrounded by a laurel wreath – winners of the Club Cup competition for the School year. The upper center of the plaque has the World Trade Center towers and in the middle left section the date 9/11/11is carved – marking the tenth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attack. A snowman holding a Jack-o-lantern is carved in the lower right corner of the plaque, representing the big snowstorm on Halloween – the only significant snowstorm of the winter season. To the left of the snowman is the newly constructed Lindsay Center for Mathematics and Science, dedicated on November 29, 2011.

The Form of 2008 Plaque

Here is a photograph of the completed plaque for the Form of 2008. It was dedicated on June 1, 2013 and hangs in the Middle Dining Hall of Coit (The Upper) above the panels that contain the names of all the members of the Form of 2008. Below the photo is the description of the elements incorporated in the plaque design.

2008_fp_framed_web

The 2008 economic recession is represented in the central image by a very grumpy bear holding a stock market chart with a downward-pointing arrow – a reference to the sharp down-turn of the market during that time. The boys’ varsity squash team won the New England Championship, and this event is represented by the two crossed squash racquets behind the bear. 2008 saw the end of the use of lunch trays in the dining hall and this is represented by the SPS monogrammed tray located to the left of the bear. Opposite the tray on the right of the bear is a SPS Waffle, representing the new waffle iron that was acquired in the dining hall that features the SPS shield. The winter of 2007/2008 produced record amounts of snow and ice. To represent the wintery weather conditions in Millville the background behind the bear shows the snow-covered School grounds, including a layer of ice beneath his feet.

2012 Form Plaque Progress: Carving Complete

The carving process for the 2012 Form plaque is complete.  Below are some photographs of the carving process, with details of the finished carving as well.

This first photograph shows the design layout on the plaque blank, with outlines in place as guides for roughing out the background.

This shows the plaque after being roughed out with a small format router.  This sets an even depth for the background of the plaque. From this point forward all the carving is done using hand tools.

A big jump to the finished carving – after many, many hours of work the fine details are all in place.  I first carve the rough shapes for the entire design and then refine each element to its finished state.

This detail shows the book with Mr. Hirschfeld’s initials – marking the beginning of his Rectorship.  The World Trade Center towers are on the right of the photograph with the 10th anniversary date of the 9/11 terrorist attack.

This detail shows the Delphian symbol – winners of the Club Cup for the 2011/2012 School year.

The Lindsay Center for Mathematics and Science is shown in this detail.

The snowman and Jack-O-lantern representing the Halloween storm that blanketed Millville in deep snow.

The next stage in the process involves sealing the plaque with oil and then painting it and adding the protective finish.  The next time you will be able to see the plaque will be Anniversary weekend at the beginning of June of 2013.  I’m looking forward to finishing the plaque and sharing it with all the members of the Form of 2012!
