The Form of 2010 Plaque

2010_fp_framed_web

The central image of the plaque is a heart with a ribbon of musical notes commemorating the (S)P.S. I Love You musical event held at Ohrstrom Library on Valentine’s Day that year. The upper left corner shows a house on wheels, representing the brick faculty house moved to make room for the Lindsay Center for Mathematics and Science building. The upper right corner features a map of Haiti and the epicenter of the devastating earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010. The bottom half of the plaque depicts a camera and a photograph with the initials “BC,” commemorating faculty member Brendan Cohen, who, in addition to being a favorite teacher, documented all four years of the Form of 2010 through his many photographs.

2010_completed_detail

The Form of 2010 plaque is now completed.  The detail photograph above shows a sample of the painted finish on the plaque – a house on wheels to represent the moving of the brick faculty house to make room for building the Lindsay Center.

The completed framed plaque will be revealed on Anniversary Weekend on Saturday May 30th – at which time photographs of the finished plaque will be published online.  Thank you to the representatives from the Form of 2010 for their help with this project –  I am looking forward to seeing members of the Form of 2010 at the SPS Anniversary event to celebrate your new Form plaque!

The carving is completed for the Form of 2010 plaque, which illustrates the following design themes:

  • Upper left: Brick house moved prior to construction of the Lindsay Center
  • Upper right: Earthquake in Haiti which occurred in January of 2010
  • Lower center: Heart with musical notes and SPS shield representing the (S)P.S. I Love You musical Valentine’s Day event put on at Ohrstrom Library
  • Bottom left and right: A camera and photograph with the initial BC, commemorating faculty member Brendan Cohen who documented all four years of the Form of 2010 through his many photographs

The plaque has been oiled and I am currently working on the painted finish for the plaque so that it will be completed in time to be put on display for Anniversary/Graduation weekend at the end of May. Updates on the progress will be posted soon.

The design stage is complete for the 2010 Form plaque. I worked with members of the Form of 2010 to come up with a list of events, and the following was chosen by them to represent events from their 6th Form year:

  • Upper left: Brick house moved prior to construction of Lindsay
  • Upper right: Earthquake in Haiti
  • Lower center: Heart with musical notes and SPS shield representing the (S)P.S. I Love You musical Valentine’s Day event put on at Ohrstrom Library
  • Bottom left and right: A camera and photograph with the initial BC, commemorating faculty member Brendan Cohen who documented all four years of the Form of 2010 through his many photographs

I will now begin carving the 2010 plaque and will be posting photos of the carving process as it progresses – stay tuned for more information!

The Form of 2011 Plaque

Here is a photograph of the completed plaque for the Form of 2011.  It is being dedicated on June 2, 2012 and hangs in the Middle Dining Hall of Coit (The Upper) above the panels that contain the names of all the members of the Form of 2011.  Below the photo is the description of the elements incorporated in the plaque design.

In 2011 the revival of the Club Cup competition was the big event of the school year.  The cup itself is represented in the center of the plaque with the symbol above it of the winning club, the Delphians – the Greek letter Delta surrounded by a laurel wreath.  In the upper left of the plaque a closed book is carved with the initials WRM which represents the end of Twelfth Rector William R. Matthews’ Rectorship.  The book symbolizes the Rural Record, a journal of day-to-day life at St. Paul’s School that was kept from 1857 up into the early 20th century.  The upper right corner of the plaque has a map of Japan with circles radiating out from the epicenter of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that occurred in March of 2011.  The lower left and right sections of the plaque represent the crew team competing at the Henley Royal Regatta in June of 2011.  A shield super-imposed above and to the left of the crew team features an element from the coat-of-arms from the Henley-on-Thames Town Hall.
